Looking Back: Building a Technically Skilled Workforce
Interest, knowledge, understanding, proficiency and attitude are strong qualities of a seafarer. Some of these qualities are foundational and are highly sought after in recruiting qualified cadets, says Seyi Ademuyiwa, current Fleet Superintendent for GoodWork Marine Services Nigeria Limited.
After a rigorous selection process which involved an online assessment, a psychometric test, medical examinations and interview sessions with technical and recruitment partners from GoodWork Marine and Atlantas Crew Management, ten cadets were shortlisted to become beneficiaries of the Tetra Foundation Seafarers Program.
For the first batch of the Seafarers Program, five cadets were planned to receive shore-based training as Marine Engineers and five as Deck Officers from the Metropolitan College Maritime Academy, Greece. Maritime training to be received is expected to earn the cadets a Bachelor’s degree in their respective disciplines.
After studies on shore have concluded, these cadets will be fed into Tetra Foundation’s extensive shipping network with oil majors & tier I ship owners to allow them to garner sea time experience through 6–12-month seafaring deployments.
Tetra Foundation believes that the training acquired by these cadets and the experience opportunities provided will contribute to creating a skilled workforce capable of feeding growing demands for specialists in the national and international maritime industry.
